As the only enterprise technical center certified by the country in Chinese polyurethane industry and one of the first group of 100 state-level enterprise R&D centers, Wanhua Technology Center boasts the first class research facilities, several world leading labs and self-developed world leading pilot test platforms.

Wanhua Technology Center owns six R&D institutions, namely Beijing Wanhua Research Institute, R&D Department, Engineering Development Department, TPU R&D Center, Shanghai Wanhua Enterprise Technical Service Center, and Wanhua US R&D Co., Ltd.

Aqueous polyurethanes:

Aqueous polyurethanes have been widely used in recent years as the replacement of traditional solvent-based polyurethane products because of the more and more restricted VOC problems in coating and adhesive industries. In addition, many traditionally used solvents have been classified as Hazardous Air Pollutants (HPAS), so it will be the trend for using Aqueous polyurethanes in stead of solvent based products, and definitely people will be benefited from the new technique.

Beijing Research Institute has been engaged in R&D of MDI-based Aqueous Polyurethane since 2006 for the better mechanical properties and lower Tg of the destination product can be obtained thereof comparing with other isocyanates. Now we have made great breakthrough in this field, and we do believe we can do better to benefit the aqueous polyurethane industry.

Building energy efficiency:

Building energy efficiency is an important component of China’s energy-saving work. From 2005, we began to participate actively and support and promote the China's building energy efficiency efforts. As the deputy head of working group for promoting polyurethane rigid foam used in building energy efficiency Which was launched by Ministry of Construction P. R. China, we developed series system house techniques of spraying, pouring, continuous and dis-continuous panels for the external wall insulation, performance testing and engineering applications. and associated with the other relevant research institute and key building insulation enterprises, raw materials enterprises, finished《Polyurethane rigid foam exterior insulation engineering and technical guidelines

To ensure project quality of the polyurethane external wall insulation, Beijing Research Institute also participated to constitute relevant standards actively ,for example: GB21558-2008 《Polyurethane rigid foam used in building insulation》;GB 《Exterior insulation and finishing system technical requirements and evaluation methods》;Construction Industry-standard 《Polyurethane rigid foam insulation panel》;the Association of Chinese Engineering construction Standardization《Specification for external thermal insulation of rigid polyurethane foam on walls》and《Technical specification for application of insulation panels made of polyurethane rigid foam》

PU/MDI Binders/Adhesives
1、BRI has developed

BRI has developed new ecological binder for straw-based panel. Straw-based panels have excellent material properties, completely free of formaldehyde, which can replace the wood-based panels such as particleboard, fiberboard and so on. Straw-based panels can be widely used for decoration, furniture, packaging and other purposes.

If we use straw to make panels, we can save a great mount of forest, and if we reuse waste materials, we also can ease pressure on energy and resources. For example, if we use 10 % in our country for straw-based panels, 70 million tons straw will be consumed, which will be able to replace all the wood-based panels every year, an annual saving of more than 100 million cubic meters of wood.

2、Adhesives for Rebounded foam

With the development of Chinese economy, the requirement of polyurethane flexible foam increasing very quickly, Rebounded foam industry is derived from flexible foam industry. The rebounded foam is prepared by mixing recycled flexible foam crumb and environmentally friendly one- component polyurethane adhesive together. The product is broadly used in carpet underlay, furniture, and so on. Toward to different technics, BRI developed different environmentally friendly one- component polyurethane adhesive. Wannate6407 is suited for making firm products,and especially for steaming procedure technics; Wannate6409 is suited for making firm products, and especially for slowly-curing technics; Wannate6405 is suited for a much more flexible feel, to get the high-quality products. Depend on BRI`s research ability, It is much more efficient get the customer`s different requirements.

Flexsible group

Flexsible group has developed a series of modifed MDI and their systems for high resilience, viscoelastic and intergral skin foam. They are widely used in automotive and furniture indusries as seating, sound insulation , steering wheels and bedding foams. With their low emission and fast cure, modified MDI is a safer and more efficient material than TDI. The newly developed modified MDI for high resilience foam can help lower the weight of the vehicle and thus the oil consumption per kilometer.

Lab Accredited by CNAS

The Analytical Lab of Beijing Research Institute accredited by CNAL according to ISO/IEC 17025, is an authoritative testing organization in China. The Lab, equipped with advanced instruments including FTIR, LC-MS,DSC, Rheometers,DMA, and so on, is engaged in the chemical and physical testing of polymer, especially in the polyurethane materials, and also in developing the analytical methods. The reports issued by the Lab are in effect by law not only in China but also in other countries who have signed mutual recognition agreements with CNAL.

Brief Introduction to Technical Research Department in Wanhua

Mainly engaged in the development and research of MDI manufacturing new technologies, new techniques and downstream products thereof, the technical research department has more than 80 research personnel including more than 10 doctors and postdoctors and more than 40 masters. Currently the department has five R&D Platforms, namely the MDI R&D platform, the PC R%D platform, the TDI R&D platform, the ADI R&D platform and the hydrogenation R&D platform.

Ⅰ. MDI R&D Platform

As a polymer with excellent properties, polyurethane, which is widely applied to the fields of military industry, aerospace, light industry, building, household appliances, traffic, etc., is called the No.5 plastic by the industrial community in the world. MDI, the key raw material with greatest amount for making polyurethane, has always been listed in Catalogue of Industries, Products and Technology Particularly Encouraged by the State for Development by State Council. Polyurethanes made by MDI have been widely applied to important fields of national economy. MDI research remains the key point of R&D. Based on the prior MDI technology, personnel in the technical research department have successfully developed an MDI production apparatus with the greatest capacity in the world and have realized the industrialized production of the apparatus, which makes China the third country owning large-scale MDI production technology in the world.

Ⅱ. PC R&D Platform

PC, the generic term for macromolecular compounds containing carbonate in the molecular chains, is a thermoplastic engineering plastic with excellent all-round performance. PC can be divided into many categories such as aliphatics, aromatics, aliphatics- aromatics, etc. However, currently only polycarbonate belonging to the aromatics has realized industrialized production. And bisphenol A (4, 4 -dihydroxy diphenyl propane) type polycarbonate is the most universal one. Thanks to its outstanding shock resistance, creep resistance, higher tensile strength, bending strength, extensibility and rigidity, bisphenol A is quickly applied to hi-tech fields of aviation, aerospace, computer, and CD, and is particularly quickly applied to CD.

Ⅲ. TDI R&D Platform

With a full name of toluene diisocyanate, TDI has many isomers with the greatest toxity among diisocyanate compounds. TDI for industrial production is mainly the mixture of 2, 4-toluene diisocyanate and 2, 6-toluene diisocyanate. With volatility, TDI is mainly used for manufacturing polyurethane resins and polyurethane foams, and is mainly applied to the production of polyurethanes such as flexible foam, pain and elastomer in the form of foaming agent and additive. In brief, TDI is used to manufacture flexible foam applied in mats, mattresses, sofas, chairs and furniture. The Application of TDI to flexible foam accounts for 80%-90% of total TDI consumption.

Ⅳ. ADI R&D Platform

Aliphatic acid isocyanates (ADI), a special group of chemicals with -N=C=O functional group, mainly include hexamethylene-diisocyanate (HDI), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), dicyclohexyl methane-4, 4' -diisocyanate (H12MDI), tetramethylbenzene dimethyl diisocyanate (TMXDI), trimethyl hexamethylene diisocyanate (TMDI), phenylenedimethylidyne diisocyanate (XDI), methylcyclohexane diisocyanate (HTDI), etc. of which HDI, IPDI, H12MDI are three most common aliphatic acid isocyanates. HDI is mainly used in the form of adduct, IPDI in the form of both monomer and adduct, and H12MDI in the form of monomer. The establishment of the platform will use the company’s resources rationally, prolong the company’s industrial chain and reinforce the company’s competitiveness.

Ⅴ. Hydrogenation R&D Platform

4, 4-Diamido dicyclohexyl methane (H12MDA), briefly called hydrogenated MDA, PACM, is mainly used for preparing the aging resistant polyurethane material H12MDI. H12MDA is favored for its application to top-grade automotive paint and water polyurethanes. Moreover, H12MDA is also required in many fields such as anti-yellowing paint, adhesive, epoxy hardener, lube additive, polyamide compounds, polyurethane elastomer, high-resilience polyurethane foam, liquid crystal material, etc. The requirements on the content of trans-trans isomer vary from 15% to 75% with excellent product performance.

In addition, the research department also owns world leading scientific research equipment such as liquid mass combined chromatograph, high temperature gel chromatograph, liquid phase chromatograph, gas phase chromatograph, ultraviolet spectrum, infrared spectrum, etc. The research department is entitled as State-level Enterprise Technology Center with great R&D strength and sustainable innovation ability.
